The Martin Foss Award 2024

Each year Bedfordshire Freemasons present an award named after the late Martin Foss, Past Provincial Grand Master for Bedfordshire and a former surgeon, to a final year student in nursing and midwifery who has made the greatest contribution to the life of the Faculty of Health and Social Science.

The award this year went to Iulian-Sorin Rusu , and his citation reads as follows: “Iulian has been described as an absolute pleasure to work with by both his Personal Academic Tutor and his Apprenticeship Coordinator.  He cares about others and his behaviour with his peers and in practice has been a role model to others. The Apprenticeship course is intensive, requiring students to study over 19 months, rather than the normal degree course duration of 3 years. During this period Iulian has consistently demonstrated his commitment and passion to become a Registrant. He worked hard and has shown his resilience in the face of adversity.”

Having joined the NHS nine years ago, as a Health Care Assistant, Iulian graduated with a BSc (Hon) in Adult Nursing and will now be specialising in adult respiratory care at Stoke Mandeville Hospital.

Iulian received the award, and a cheque for £500.00, from the Deputy Provincial Grand Master in Charge, Clive Walsh, who was accompanied by the Provincial Communications Officer, Paul Smith, when they attended the Graduation Ceremony for the School of Healthcare Practice at Bedfordshire University.
