Three Pillars Feeding the Homeless Launches in Dunstable
Whilst in the Chair of the Earl of Courtown Lodge in 2022, Simon Barter became increasingly aware of the number of people sleeping rough in and around Dunstable town centre. Troubled that homelessness remains such a visible issue in the 21st century, he shared with his Lodge his wish to see Freemasonry involved in a meaningful and practical community project.
Simon explored existing support through local charities, councils and agencies, quickly discovering how complex it would be to establish a new initiative from scratch. However, regular contact with rough sleepers near his home highlighted the urgent need for food, shelter, clothing and basic support, strengthening his resolve to act.
At his Installation in September 2025, Simon discussed his ideas with Ged Dempsey, founder of the Three Pillars Feeding the Homeless Charity, established in Peterborough in 2017 and now operating across several Provinces with the support of the MCF. Encouraged by Ged’s experience and proven model, Simon—together with Earl of Courtown Lodge member Gurjeet Singh—set about expanding the initiative into Dunstable.
Following an early New Year visit to assess the situation firsthand, plans moved forward rapidly. Three Pillars Feeding the Homeless will launch in Ashton Square, Dunstable, on Monday 16th March 2026, operating every Monday evening, providing hot and cold food, clothing, toiletries, sleeping bags and tents, alongside signposting to support agencies.
Supported by Dunstable Town Council and Central Bedfordshire Council, and staffed by volunteers from the Earl of Courtown Lodge and their partners, the initiative demonstrates Freemasonry’s commitment to community service in a visible and practical way.
