The Earl of Courtown Lodge no.7653 – the Zulu Wars and two VC’s!

The lodge enjoyed a presentation and talk from Ian Church on the subject of two Victoria Cross Holders, Lieutenant’s Melville and Coghill, both freemasons.

The talk covered their lives pre the Zulu war and their demise at the the battle of Isandhlwana.

Ian’s talk also covered the Zulu military tactics and culture, this he combined by supplying contemporary atrifacts from the war and cultural items.

As the pictures show there was plenty to enjoy and admire.

The Earl of Courtown serving in both the second Boer War and the First World War, where he was mentioned in Despatches, would have no doubt approved of the evening!
