Bedfordshire Freemasons Support Sue Ryder “St John’s Hospice Starlight Hike
When Assistant Provincial Grand Master Steve Attwood called for volunteers to assist with marshalling and stewarding the Sue Ryder “St John’s Hospice Starlight Hike”, held on the evening of 11th October 2025 the response from Bedfordshire Freemasons was exceptional.
Around 40 members from across the Province, together with their wives and partners, gave up their time to support this special community event. The evening featured a 5km charity walk, starting and finishing at Everard Meadow, Longholme Way, Bedford, with marshalling and stewarding points along the route to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all participants.
On arrival, volunteers were checked in and deployed in two groups to their assigned posts. Representatives from Sue Ryder expressed their genuine amazement and gratitude at the number of volunteers and the level of support offered by the Freemasons. Indeed one comment was “I never realised there were so many!”
For many of the helpers, being issued with a walkie-talkie for communication and emergency purposes brought back fond memories — and plenty of good humour!
Reflecting on the event, Steve Attwood said:
“This was a wonderful example of Freemasonry in action. Our members, their wives and partners once again demonstrated the true spirit of community support that is at the heart of everything we do. The enthusiasm, teamwork and generosity shown throughout the evening made a real difference to a very worthwhile cause.”
The event was a great success and once again highlighted that when it comes to community engagement and charitable support, Bedfordshire Freemasons are always ready to step forward and lend a hand.
