Read and Talk Learning Workshop at Old Dunstablians
On 14th April, members of the Old Dunstablians Lodge invited the Provincial Learning & Development Officer, Kyle Whitbread, to speak with them at their Lodge of Instruction.
In the first part of the workshop Kyle gave an overview of the Solomon VLE resource, highlighting some of the features available to users, before Brethren logged on using their smartphones to explore for themselves.
A lively discussion followed on how Solomon could be used by new masons to make their ‘daily advancement’; how the Lodge Mentor could use the content to support new members e.g. when they retire from the lodge whilst a degree they have not attained is worked; and how Nuggets and longer articles could feature during a lodge meeting.
The second part covered techniques that could be used when learning and remembering parts of the work for our ceremonies. They practiced using mnemonics and acronyms; dual coding (a question for the lodge – what came before the glasses?); and even ‘built’ their own Mind Palaces to help recall the Seven Liberal Arts & Sciences! All fuelled by cupcakes as it was someone’s birthday…
Kyle would be very happy to hold a similar session with your lodge, please contact him to arrange a visit on the email address lado@pglbeds.org.
He hopes to deliver ‘Read & Talk’ at each centre before October 2025
