Rugby is the Game for Roger de Somery Lodge

Saturday 1st October saw the Installation Ceremony of Bedfordshire’s Themed Rugby Lodge, the Roger de Somery ‘Rugby’ Lodge No.6488.  The day also saw the start of the 75th year of the foundation of the Lodge.

New Worshipful Master, W Bro. George Andrew Potter here seen receiving the Ceremonial Rugby Ball from the APGM, W Bro. Hugh Love.  Also you may note the Deacons Wand with an addition cross bar formed into Rugby Posts and with Rugby Ball shaped gavels kindly made and donated by W Bro. Roger Wood, forms some of the unique differences of this themed Lodge.  A new Banner has been designed incorporating the Rugby theme whist retaining the Roger de Somery Lodge traditions and awaits approval along with the addition of the word ‘Rugby’ to the name change.

The PGM was also in the building and surprised us with a brief visit, somewhat in a state of undress as he was dashing off to visit V W Bro. Michael Sawyer in hospital, having just been installed as WM in the Lodge bearing the former PGM’s name

About 5 years back a group of Masons who were ex-Rugby Union players approached the former Provincial Membership Officer, W Bro. Andrew Potter and stated their interest in forming a Rugby Themed Lodge and a Development Group was formed.  Various options were discussed, then suddenly a call from Provincial Office one Thursday asking if we could get about a dozen Masons to the meeting of the Roger de Somery Lodge on the Saturday following we could save it from having to hand it’s Warrant back.  We managed to do this and held a scheduled meeting.  Discussions with the remaining members of Roger de Somery ensued and they discussed and voted whether to accept us as new members and agree to the ‘Rugby’ theme.  They agreed and about 20 of us completed forms to join.  Then Covid and Lockdown struck just before the meeting when we were all going to join.  Nearly two years later a slightly depleted bunch finally joined and the rest as they say, is History.  Except it’s a very young history and indeed a living history as we move forward.  The last WM, W Bro. Nigel Thrale of the non-themed Lodge had, at all our requests, held the WM Chair for nearly 4 years and Saturday finally saw him able to hand over to W Bro. Andrew Potter, probably with a big sigh of relief, now being probably one of the longest continually serving WM’s in our Province?

If you’re interested in Rugby (*Union or the other game) or are a former Player / Coach / Fan or just curious, come along to Roger de Somery ‘Rugby’ Lodge No.6488 and join us for a Ceremony with differences.  We also plan to combine some of our meetings with watching a game at one of our local Rugby Clubs.

Our next meeting is on Saturday 5th November at The Pavilion, Bowling Green lane, Luton, an Initiation so all Masons are welcome.  With a mid-morning start so we can watch Luton Rugby Club First XI vs Northampton BBOB in the Midlands Division at their ground after the meeting.

Hope to see you there.

W Bro. Andrew Potter, Worshipful Master
