Worshipful Brother Ernest Joseph Hewison

Dear Brethren,

It is with great sadness that I inform you of the sad passing to the Grand Lodge above Worshipful Brother and Comp. Ernest Joseph Hewison, PProvSGW on 4th of January 2026 aged 100.

Ernest was Initiated on the 30th of November 1961 in Wessex Lodge L5297 (Hants & I of W) resigning in 2004.

In 1967 he was a joining member of Lodge of St Peter L6092 (Erased) becoming Master in 1980 and subsequently Director of Ceremonies from 2000 – 2005. He was elected an honorary member in 2020.

Ernest was Exalted in Chapter of Concord C394 (Hants & I of W) on the 24th of January 1963, he resigned in 1983. He was a member of  Dunstable C6092 from 1977 – 2021 and became a joining member of Bedfordshire First Principals C7301 in 1986, of which he installed as MEZ in 2006, resigning 2020.

He was a Past Sovereign in Rose Croix of Dunstable Chapter RC916 in 1984.

His first appointment to Provincial Rank was in 1988 to PProvJGD, in 1995 promotion to PProvGSuptWks then to PProvJGW in 2001, and finally in 2006 he was promoted to PProvSGW.

 Ernest led a full life, he witnessed many historic events, and amazingly served Craft Freemasonry for 64 years and Royal Arch Chapter 62 years.

 Ernest had been suffering with poor health; Dementia playing a part of latter life. Sadly, Ernest had been bedridden for the last few years.

His funeral service will be held at The Vale Luton Crematorium at 14:00hrs on Monday 2nd of February.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his son David and the family at this very sad time. I will arrange a condolences card to the family on behalf of yourself and the province.
