Martin Foss Award 2022

Each year Bedfordshire Freemasons present an award named after the late Martin Foss, Past Provincial Grand Master for Bedfordshire and a former surgeon, to a final year student in nursing and midwifery who has made the greatest contribution to the life of the Faculty of Health and Social Science.

The award this year went to Hannah Abbey, and her citation reads as follows: “Hannah is a driven, organised student who has developed inspirational relationships with fellow students and staff. Hannah has always been motivated to develop her skills as a midwife; in her 3rd year she approached lecturers to discuss how she could improve women centred care, eagerly discussing ideas and undertaking extra responsibility such as generating a tool to enhance women’s pregnancy outcomes. She continues to demonstrate this drive through her activities as study support within the classroom and recruitment support, encouraging others to follow her lead into midwifery. This is an attitude which others can emulate”.

Hannah received the award, and a cheque for £500.00, from the Deputy Provincial Grand Master, Worshipful Brother Clive Walsh, who accompanied the Provincial Grand Charity Steward, Worshipful Brother Steve Joyce, when they attended the Graduation Ceremony for the School of Healthcare Practice at Bedfordshire University.
