An Evening with the Victoria Cross

It was a splendid evening at The Keep on 1st September when the Martin Foss Lodge of Research welcomed Mark Smith, who is widely recognised as a leading expert on the Victoria Cross as well as a BBC Antiques Roadshow Military Medals Expert, to give a fascinating talk on Victoria Cross Holders and his unique insight into how and why these extraordinary awards were made.

Mark was warmly welcomed and introduced by Ian Church, and from that moment the audience of some  60 guests were captivated throughout the evening.

Mark’s presentation was by turns fascinating, poignant, moving and humorous, drawing on the personal records and stories of  just some the men behind the medals. His knowledge and enthusiasm brought these remarkable acts of courage vividly to life.

Following the presentation, guests retired for refreshments and a meal, during which Lodge Master Mark Edwards eloquently thanked Mark for an outstanding and memorable talk.

Mark then responded with a wonderfully entertaining account of his personal “faux pas” media moment — an anecdote which left the audience with aching sides!

It was a superb evening and a fitting start to the new Masonic season in Bedfordshire, enjoyed not only by Freemasons but also by their wives, partners and many guests.

A memorable evening of reminding all of so much about ourselves and what perhaps sets others apart.
